Xi’an (Chinese: 西安; Wade–Giles: Hsi-An, also spelled Hsi-an, Hsian, or Sian) is the capital of the Shaanxi province, and a sub-provincial city in China. One of the oldest cities in China, with more than 3,100 years of history, the city known as Chang’an before the Ming Dynasty. The area of Xi’an is 9983 square-kilometers and it has a population of 8.46 million.
Xi’an has developed very quickly in the past couple of years. The main industrial zones in Xi’an includes Xi’an Economic and Technological Development Zone and Xi’an Hi-Tech Industries Development Zone. The primary industries in Xi’an include the telecommunications industry, the software industry, the outsourcing industries and the aerospace industry. Some domestic and multinational telecommunication vendors have set up research and development centers and factories in Xi’an such as Huawei, ZTE, NEC, Fujitsu, and Siemens. The universities in Xi’an such as Xidian University and Xi’an Jiaotong University etc have provided thousands of excellent engineers for the telecommunications industry.

City life and Foreigners in Xi’an: Nightlife, Army of Terracotta Warriors and Horses
There are about 300 thousands foreigners in Xi’an. The city combines its ancient historical elements with the style of modern China giving foreigners an opportunity to explore the Chinese culture without feeling out of place. The city is surrounded by a well-preserved city wall that was re-constructed in the 14th century during the early Ming Dynasty and was based on the inner imperial palace of the Tang Dynasty. The Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang and his Terracotta Army is also located 40 km to the east of the city center, in the city’s suburbs.
The Bell Tower and Drum Tower, both are located at the city’s central axis. The city’s Muslim quarter, which is home to the Great Mosque of Xi’an is very well known in the foreign community. The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda and Small Wild Goose Pagoda are both spectacular towers and both are well over 1,000 years old and have survived many earthquakes. The former is located next to a large square that contains the largest fountain in Asia which projects water high into the air, rising and falling in time along with music during one of the daily performances (usually at noon and soon after sunset). These towers housed and protected Buddhist writings in the past. The Stele Forest is famous for its numerous historic inscriptions and stone-works. The Famen Temple and its towering pagoda is located on the city’s outskirt Xi Ming Temple. Apart from the ancient buildings and historical places of interests there are also some modern shopping malls in Xi’an. Many world famous brands can also be found in Xi’an, such as Tiffany & Co, Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Guess, Chole, Timberland. The huge market of Xi’an gives people more opportunities to do business.
The nightlife in Xi’an is also very colorful. There are all kinds of nightclubs and bars in Xi’an. The following are the most famous ones: MIX, (Big light ad), Palando, Night Cat, Dance floor.
